Recycling & disposal

Air-conditioning systems are primarily made of highly recyclable materials--steel and plastic. In fact, the Appliance Recycling Consortium estimates that some 90 percent of all steel from appliances is recycled. Discarding used air-conditioning equipment requires some care to ensure that the coolants, which can cause ozone depletion, are not released to the air. Your municipality may require the safe removal of any coolants before it will haul a discarded unit away.

For advice on how to properly dispose your A/C, check the EPA’s guidelines on Disposing of Appliances with Refrigerants.
