EnergyGuide tag on appliances. The federal government set minimum efficiency standards for most appliances. The EnergyGuide tag found on new appliances shows the total energy consumed per year by that particular model. It also shows how it rates on a scale from worst to best energy efficiency compared with similar products. The label also provides an estimate of how much the appliance will cost to operate. Consumer Reports has found that the government estimates for dishwashers and washers may be high.
Energy Star label on electronics, appliances, lighting, office equipment, heating and cooling. The Energy Star label is awarded to the most energy efficient products within a given product type. For example, an appliance must be a certain percentage more efficient than the minimum energy standard defined by EnergyGuide for that product type. Energy Star is a joint project of the federal Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, and is designed to encourage manufacturers to boost product efficiency, and help consumers find more efficient products. We recommend that you look for the Energy Star label for most products but believe our energy efficiency ratings are more rigorous for dishwashers and washers.
For a complete listing of products that carry Energy Star and how efficient they must be in order to carry the label, visit the government's Energy Star site.
