Did you know?

Not all the electronics equipment sent off for recycling necessarily ends up at an appropriately managed facility?

There are steps you can take to help ensure your electronic equipment is recycled responsibly?

Only about 11 percent of electronics are recycled, according to the most recent U.S. EPA estimates?

Recycle

If nobody wants your electronic device, or if it's broken beyond repair, recycle it. Electronic equipment should be recycled to keep the toxins it contains out of landfills. However, not all the equipment returned for recycling ends up at an appropriately managed facility. The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, an environmental advocacy group, has found that some equipment has been diverted to other countries where equipment is sent to landfills; there it can contaminate the environment, and some local residents, trying to reclaim valuable metal components, could be exposed to hazardous materials. For tips on how and where to responsibly recycle, visit our sections on Computers, Cell phones, TVs, and Other electronics.
