PROGRAM NAME: Maine Quality Trademark Seal |
| |
WHAT THIS LABEL MEANS:
The Maine Quality Trademark label is seen on a variety of products including milk, blueberries, dry beans, canned beans, potatoes and spring water. The Maine Quality Trademark label means that the product was produced in the state of Maine except for milk, where 20% of a Maine milk bottler's input can come from out-of-state cows. The product must also meet or exceed maximum quality or grade standards established by law. Each specific product (e.g. milk, blueberries, beans) included in the Maine Quality Trademark program has been submitted for review to the Maine Department of Agriculture. Maine's Department of Agriculture has guidelines for determining the standards that must be followed. These standards are in addition to the highest quality and grade standards that have been previously established for a specific commodity (by a government agency or industry). Once the Maine Department of Agriculture has drafted standards for a specific product, the standards are made available for broad public and industry input before the final standards are issued.
Milk MQT labeled milk must also be derived from cows that were raised without the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH) (also known as recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST)).
